Alexandre Lippmann was born in Paris in 1881. He is known for being the grandson of Alexandre Dumas, and a quality swordsman, medalist of the Olympic Games of 1908, 1920 and 1924. In addition to his sports career, Lippman draws. A fine watercolorist, he frequents the worldly Paris and Kiki de Montparnasse, of which he paints an intimate series.
This ink on paper represents Kiki lying on an unscheduled bed. Her head and bust rest on a chubby cushion, her hands, crossed behind her head, give the model her nonchalant and mischievous look. The painter draws the shapes of the nude with accuracy, gives shine to his short hair and sketches dense and smoky shadows to his silhouette.
