    Description

"Frederik Hendrik KAEMMERER (The Hague 1839 - Paris 1902) - The young violinist."
Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard.
    Dimensions: 32.5 x 23 cm, with the frame 45 x 34 cm.
In our painting, a young girl goes to or returns from her violin lesson. Chaperoned by her mother or a lady companion, furtive glances are exchanged between the violinist and a young man met on their way.
The drawing is lively and precise, the touch light and removed. The attitudes of the characters are captured in the moment.
    F. H. Kaemmerer, Dutch painter, began studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, in particular with Samuel-Leonardus Verveer, then he studied art in Paris where he was a student of Jean-Léon Génrome from 1863.
Very early noticed in Holland, Kaemmerer went to Paris in 1865 at the invitation of the influential Goupil & Cie gallery, he will be the only Dutch artist of his generation to settle there permanently.
The artist exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1870. He received a medal in 1874 and a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor the same year.
He painted a Wedding hall for the town hall of the 20th arrondissement of Paris.
He achieved great success for his small paintings representing subjects of the Directory or the first Empire, success also internationally where American amateurs competed for his works.
Renowned for his social scenes, he nevertheless remains close to his friends from The Hague school and contributes to exchanges between France and Holland.
Museums: Mulhouse, The Hague, Washington, Folkestone, Ianet Jane Bothwel Collection
