"Jan Michiel RUYTEN (1813-1881) or Jean Michael Ruyters"
"View of the canal". Oil on panel, signed at the bottom right.Dimensions: 20 x 24.5 cm.
Jan Michiel Ruyten or Jan Ruyten was born in Antwerp on April 9, 1813. He remained there all his life, until his death in 1881. He is a painter, draftsman and engraver. He represents genre paintings, landscapes, some of which are urban, and history paintings. Belgian Romanesque painter, he is inspired by that of the Netherlands.
Here, he fixes his subject on the edges of a canal. Contemplative in nature, he delicately restores the details of the stones and the ripples of the water. The bridge draws its vaults, the painter brightens the composition of some figures, in the foreground and on the bridge. Here, the painter releases his touch: he adds matter, softens his gesture and gives density to the painting
