Pair of bronze ewer with two patinas depicting Bacchanalian scenes after Clodion.
Circular base with a pedestal with channels decorated with a frieze of vine tassels and a frieze of pearls. The gilded bronze frame supports the belly with large stylized acanthus leaves. The medal-patinated belly is decorated with bas-reliefs after Clodion, representing putti and satyr children manhandling a dog and a goat while brandishing thyrses. Above, vine tassels and friezes of gilded bronze pearls adorn the upper part of the ewer. The spillway receives a decoration of leaves of water at the base as well as a decoration of vine tassels and friezes of olives and coins. A winged bacchic putto sitting in front of a bird straddles each of the guilloche handles while holding bunches of grapes in his hands. Vine leaves wrap around the handle also decorated with grooves, foliage and finished with a ram's head capped with leaves.
Work of the end of the XIX century.
These scenes are to be compared to the bas-reliefs made by Clodion for the Condé Hotel in 1781 at the request of the Princess of Bourbon-Condé. The architect of the Condé Hotel, Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart, commissioned Clodion to create seven bas-reliefs. They were located in the courtyard of the mansion and took place around the oculus. Two models very close to the scene depicted, titledchildren's channels. The Sacrifice of the Goat, made in 1781, are kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at the Louvre Museum
