Mercury (lat.:Mercurius) is the god of trade in Roman mythology. Assimilated to the Greek Hermes, he also became the god of thieves, travels and the messenger of other gods. His name is linked to the Latin wordsmerx(fr.: merchandise), mercari(fr.: to trade), andmerces(fr.: salary). His traditional attributes are the purse, most often held in the hand, the petasus (wide-brimmed hat, decorated with wings), the caduceus and winged sandals.
He was celebrated on May 15 especially during the Mercuralia.
