Exceptional painting representing a scene of life in the Roman countryside, signed and dated lower left 1878.

On its original canvas with its original 19th frame in carved and gilded wood.

This artist studied in Switzerland and then in Florence, settling in Rome in 1872 specializing in the representation of ancient monuments and scenes of the Roman countryside. This spectacular view of the Claudia aqueduct was produced in situ, a few years before he took over the studio of his compatriot Hermann CORRODÎ, unlike other canvases painted after his return to Switzerland in 1903.

Built by CALIGULA, the Claudia aqueduct is the one that supplies the highest hills of Rome, in particular the Palatine and the Aventine.

The colorful costumes of the Roman peasants and shepherds of this period illustrate the joie de vivre of Campania, to which Grand Tour enthusiasts were very sensitive.
