Here, Camille Roqueplan portrays a somewhat daring navy. Rather than representing the ships being beaten by the waves, he represents them on the sand.
Two fishermen turn their backs to us; the painter brightens them up with color. The painting is full of anecdotal details: towards the middle of the painting, two baskets are strewn on the floor. The paint is polished, the technique clean.
Camille Roqueplan is representative of the romantic movement following Flers, Huet, Isabey.
After studying, he exhibited at the Salon in 1922 where he was awarded several times.
His works have many similarities with those of Paul Huet, alongside whom he worked at that time. It exhibits landscapes, seascapes from Normandy, Brittany, the Pyrenees, the Vosges, Holland. Around 1830, he had a very busy workshop. Suffering from tuberculosis, he died at the age of 52.
