    Louis-Aimé Japy
Pupil of François-Louis Français and J.-B.-Camille Corot, Louis-Aimé Japy disdains the family industry to devote himself to landscape painting. He started at the Salon of the Society of French Artists in 1864 and exhibited there very regularly until 1914. He obtained a medal in 1870, a second-class medal in 1873, and the silver medal at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. He became a member of the French Artists in 1883, appeared in a collective exhibition at Georges Petit, in Paris, in 1888, and was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1906. Japy visited Italy at the beginning of his career and brought back from this trip several subjects of paintings, but he mainly painted French sites, especially the Jura and his native Doubs. He also brought back many landscapes from his travels in Brittany, Picardy and the Oise. He likes delicate studies of light and has a quivering touch, without neglecting the precision of the drawing. Considered one of Corot's most gifted students, Louis-Aimé Japy knows how to translate nature with great sensitivity. The poetry that emerges from his pastoral scenes is often bathed in a melancholic light. His works are present in many museums.
