BERTIN Roger
Faithful to the Butte that he has never left, he has had his studio in the new Bateau-Lavoir since 1982. Max Jacob, his godfather, gave him his first drawing lessons. Bertin was six years old when the poet left the Butte to retire to Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire. He received some watercolor lessons from Lucien Dupré. In 1934, he entered the Jean de Botton Academy, then the Frochot Academy in 1935. Received as a member of the Salon d'Automne in 1937. Exhibition in New York Demotte gallery, and in Paris Charpentier gallery, in 1939. In 1946, he visited Algeria and Morocco and exhibited there, as well as in 1947 & 1948, trips to Black Africa (1950), then to the Far East (1951).
A prolific artist, Bertin painted Montmartre in both oil and watercolor. He was also known for landscapes, snow, interiors, still lifes, and for a time he had a predilection for train stations, particularly that of Saint-Lazare. Bertin exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1941, at Comparaisons, and at Galliera (Peintres Témoins de leur Temps), at the Salon des Indépendants, of which he was a member, at the Nationale des Beaux-Arts
